Additional Atlas Orthogonal Technique (AOT) INFORMATION
Atlas Orthogonal Technique in Dr. Spurgeon’s words:
“I grew up seeing chiropractors, I thought everybody got adjusted. It wasn’t until I was older and going through Chiropractic College that I realized there were people who didn’t go to see chiropractors, and some were even scared to get adjusted. It was then that I thought, ‘why would somebody not want to be adjusted?’ I came up with two possibilities. Number one, some people thought that adjusting didn’t do anything. They thought it was all placebo, no actual realignment would happen. Second, some people may be scared of getting hurt while being adjusted.
That’s what made Atlas Orthogonal make sense. The technique is designed with pre and post x-rays in mind, therefore, we can see the results. Also, there should be immediate decrease in tenderness/pain at the upper cervical spine. It is one of the most gentle techniques available. Because of the specificity and accuracy involved, we can adjust the vertebrae into alignment with a tiny amount of force, therefore there is a minimal chance of injury.
I don't have a personal "miracle" story about chiropractic adjustment that got me into the profession. I just felt good after getting adjusted. I did witness a “miracle” occur in front of me, and that helped push me towards practicing the Atlas Orthogonal Technique:
It was one of my first days in the “main clinic” at Palmer (Chiropractic College). I was observing as I was just beginning my internship. An established patient entered the clinic. I was informed that she was previously a victim of a car accident that had broken the top vertebrae of her neck, the atlas. The fracture had gone unnoticed at the time, and the bone healed on its own. Due to the way it healed, it seemed to be causing a lot of problems for her. She was visibly shaking with tremors as she walked into the room. She had labored breathing, sunglasses on (indoors) due to light sensitivity, and she just looked in rough shape. She received her adjustment with the Atlas Orthogonal instrument, and about thirty seconds after the adjustment was made, she was helped to a sitting position, and the ensuing results were amazing. Her eyes slowly opened wide, the tremors left her body, and her breathing became more regular. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Seeing these immense changes in front of me with such a gentle force made another big impact on me, encouraging me to further my studies in this technique. Fast forward several years and I have become Board Certified in the Technique. While I have seen great results with many different techniques, I prefer Atlas Orthogonal Technique for any difficult cases concerning the head and neck.”

From the Sweat Institute (research institute for Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic):
“The art and science of Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic is the study of the spine with specific concentration on the first bone in the neck, the Atlas vertebrae. A conventional chiropractic adjustment is done with the Doctor’s hands, but Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic utilizes a precise, repeatable, x-ray-analyzed chiropractic program to adjust the Atlas vertebrae by a percussive force Instrument. In doing so, the Doctors remove nerve interference.
The Georgia Institute of Technology’s engineering department helped Dr. Sweat develop, define and refine the x-ray vector program of adjusting. Seven AO Instruments have been updated for precision and excellence over the years. The R.W. Sweat Foundation research studies have helped millions of patients and their families, students and doctors. And since its development there have been numerous books and articles on the subject.
Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic is taught at five Chiropractic Colleges, and is practiced in six countries and at more than 600 chiropractic practices worldwide. Medical doctors, neurologists, podiatrists, endocrinologists, dentists and other chiropractors refer their patients to the Sweat Institute for Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic.
The Orthogonal Chiropractic adjustment is easy, painless and full of incredible results without manipulation. Your Cervical Spine is vital to your health and well-being. Healing takes time. Human nature tempts to put off seeking relief for our physical problems, and then makes us impatient for relief. Remember, only a thorough treatment plan can provide lasting relief. There are no shortcuts to good health. Time and professional care are the only answers.”

Dr. Spurgeon (middle) posing with former NFL players Drew Bledsoe (left) and Tony Graziani. He met them at an atlas orthogonal seminar in Oregon. They are both advocating for the use of atlas orthogonal being implemented into the NFL to help reduce the symptoms we are seeing with CTE and post concussion syndrome.
